Summer in the Spirit – Part 3

Summer in the Spirit 3

John 16:5–15

John 16:7 — “But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away…”

That statement must have shocked the disciples. How could it be better to have Jesus leave?
But Jesus knew: the Spirit within us would be more powerful than His physical presence beside us.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is not just about signs and wonders—it’s about conviction, transformation, sanctification: guidance, making us holy, forming Christ in us, and helping us overcome the flesh.

Jhn 16:5  “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’

Jhn 16:6  But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts [and taken complete possession of them].

Jhn 16:7  But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor–Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

Jhn 16:8  And He, when He comes, will convict the world about[the guilt of] sin [and the need for a Savior], and about righteousness, and about judgment:

Jhn 16:9  about sin [and the true nature of it], because they do not believe in Me [and My message];

Jhn 16:10  about righteousness [personal integrity and godly character], because I am going to My Father and you will no longer see Me;

Jhn 16:11  about judgment [the certainty of it], because the ruler of this world (Satan) has been judged and condemned.

Jhn 16:12  “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear [to hear] them now.

Jhn 16:13  But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father–the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].

Jhn 16:14  He will glorify and honor Me, because He (the Holy Spirit) will take from what is Mine and will disclose it to you.

Jhn 16:15  All things that the Father has are Mine. Because of this I said that He [the Spirit] will take from what is Mine and will reveal it to you.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS US OF SIN AND RIGHTEOUSNESS (John 16:8–11)

“When He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment.”

Conviction is the Holy Spirit’s work of exposing the truth about sin, righteousness, and judgment to lead us into repentance, transformation, and faith in Jesus Christ.

Conviction is not condemnation—it is the Spirit’s loving confrontation that awakens us to truth and calls us into deeper relationship with Jesus.

A.   CONVICTION OF SIN – Revealing What Needs Healing

John 16:9 – “Concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.”

The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to our unbelief, rebellion, and broken patterns.

  • Romans 3:23– “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
  • Acts 2:37– After Peter preached, the people were “cut to the heart”—that’s conviction.
  • Psalm 139:23-24– “Search me, O God… see if there is any offensive way in me.”

The Spirit doesn’t just show us our wrong behavior; He reveals the root causes—

Unbelief – The refusal or inability to trust God’s truth and promises.

Pain Emotional wounds from past experiences that distort our present behavior.

Pride A self-reliant attitude that resists correction and dependence on God.

Trauma Deep emotional or psychological injury that influences how we perceive and respond to life.

Lack of Trust in God A fear-driven mindset that doubts God’s goodness, timing, or care.

  1. Concerning righteousness

John 16:10 – “Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see Me no longer.”

Righteousness is the state of being made right with God and living in a way that reflects His character.

The Spirit reminds us that righteousness is not earned; it is received through union with Christ.

Also that we should have personal integrity and character as believers.

2 Corinthians 5:21

“He made Christ who knew no sin to [judicially] be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God [that is, we would be made acceptable to Him and placed in a right relationship with Him by His gracious lovingkindness].”

Philippians 3:9

“And may be found in Him [believing and relying on Him], not having any righteousness of my own derived from [my obedience to] the Law and its rituals, but [possessing] that [genuine righteousness] which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith.”

Matthew 6:33

“But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.”

Jesus ascended, but the Holy Spirit continues His work—assuring us that we are righteous in God’s eyes through Christ.

C. CONVICTION OF JUDGMENT – Releasing the Power of Victory

John 16:11 – “Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”

The Spirit reminds us that Satan has already been judged and defeated. We don’t fight for victory—we fight from victory.

Colossians 2:15 (AMP)

“When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities [those supernatural forces of evil operating against us], He made a public example of them [exhibiting them as captives in His triumphal procession], having triumphed over them through the cross.”

Hebrews 2:14 (AMP)

“Therefore, since [these His] children share in flesh and blood [the physical nature of mankind], He Himself in the same way also shared in the same [physical nature], so that through [experiencing] death He might make powerless (ineffective, impotent) him who had the power of death—that is, the devil—”

Romans 16:20 (AMP)

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The [grace and] favor of our Lord Jesus be with you.”

Conviction of judgment isn’t about scaring us—it’s about emboldening us. The enemy has no legal authority over a Spirit-filled believer.

Live in the truth that you’re no longer a slave to fear. The Spirit empowers you to walk in authority.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDES US INTO TRUTH AND TRANSFORMATION, (John 16:13-15;
  2. He leads us into new life

Romans 8:1 – “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”

We are free from guilt, but that freedom has a direction: toward Christlikeness.

  1. He changes our mindset

Romans 8:5 – “Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit…”

Sanctification means a mindset shift—what you feed grows.

  1. He helps us to understand scripture and the things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10–12 (AMP) –
“For God has unveiled them and revealed them to us through the [Holy] Spirit… no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God… so that we may know and understand the wonderful things freely given to us by God.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT GLORIFIES JESUS IN US (John 16:14)

THE HOLY SPIRIT GLORIFIES JESUS IN US

John 16:14 – “He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.”

A. He Reveals the Character and Nature of Jesus

  • The Spirit shows us who Jesus truly is—not just historically, but personally.

2Co 3:18  And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.

B. He Forms Christ’s Image in Us

  • Sanctification is the Spirit’s work of shaping us to reflect Jesus in every area of life.

Gal 4:19  My little children, for whom I am again in [the pains of] labor until Christ is [completely and permanently] formed within you–

C. He Comforts us in our trials that we may comfort others

  • The Spirit comforts us specifically during times of trouble.

2Co 1:4  who comforts and encourages us in every trouble so that we will be able to comfort and encourage those who are in any kind of trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

D. He Declares Christ’s Truth to Us

  • The Spirit doesn’t speak on His own but magnifies Jesus by communicating His words, will, and ways.
  • John 16:13–14– “He will not speak on His own… He will glorify Me.”

E. He Makes bodies a Lives a Living Temple

  • As temples of the Holy Spirit, we honor and glorify Jesus with our bodies, actions, and witness.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19–20– “Your body is a temple… glorify God in your body.”
