THE ATTITUDE OF THE BLESSED
THE ATTITUDE OF THE BLESSED
Mat 5:3 “Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]. [Luk 6:20-23]
Mat 5:4 “Blessed [forgiven, refreshed by God’s grace] are those who mourn [over their sins and repent], for they will be comforted [when the burden of sin is lifted]. [Isa 61:2]
Mat 5:5 “Blessed [inwardly peaceful, spiritually secure, worthy of respect] are the gentle [the kind-hearted, the sweet-spirited, the self-controlled], for they will inherit the earth. [Psa 37:11]
Mat 5:6 “Blessed [joyful, nourished by God’s goodness] are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness[those who actively seek right standing with God], for they will be [completely] satisfied. [Isa 55:1-2]
Mat 5:7 “Blessed [content, sheltered by God’s promises] are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Mat 5:8 “Blessed [anticipating God’s presence, spiritually mature] are the pure in heart [those with integrity, moral courage, and godly character], for they will see God.[Psa 24:3-4]
Mat 5:9 “Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God. [Heb 12:14]
Mat 5:10 “Blessed [comforted by inner peace and God’s love] are those who are persecuted for doing that which is morally right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever].
Mat 5:11 “Blessed [morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness] are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil things against you because of [your association with] Me.
Mat 5:12 Be glad and exceedingly joyful, for your reward in heaven is great [absolutely inexhaustible]; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. [2Ch 36:16]
The Beatitudes come from Gospel of Matthew 5:3–12 and are part of the Sermon on the Mount. The word beatitude comes from the Latin beatus, meaning blessed, flourishing, or living in God’s favor.
Jesus is not simply giving attitudes to admire. He is describing the character of people who belong to the Kingdom of God and the spiritual posture believers should remain in.
The Beatitudes show the spiritual DNA of Kingdom citizens.
Below is the heart of what they tell us to be or stay.
- Stay Spiritually Dependent
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 5:3 AMP)
This is not about financial poverty. It means recognizing your spiritual need for God.
What it calls us to stay:
- Humble before God
- Aware that we cannot save ourselves
- Dependent on God’s grace
Kingdom people never graduate from humility.
To be poor in spirit means recognizing our complete dependence on God.
Jas 4:6 But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD and HAUGHTY, BUT [continually] GIVES [the gift of] GRACE TO THE HUMBLE [who turn away from self-righteousness].” [Pro 3:34]
- Stay Sensitive to Sin
This mourning refers primarily to grief over sin and brokenness—our own and the world’s
Rom 3:23 since all have sinned and continually fall short of the glory of God,
Sin is understood as any thought, attitude, action, or condition that violates or falls short of the will, character, and law of God. Scripture presents sin not only as wrongful acts but also as a state of rebellion and separation from God.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matt 5:4)
What it calls us to stay:
- Tender toward God
- Repentant when we fall
- Grieved by injustice and evil
A hardened heart cannot walk closely with God.
- Missing God’s standard(hamartia)
- Crossing God’s boundaries(parabasis)
- Rejecting God’s authority(anomia)
- Practicing injustice(adikia)
- Rebelling against God(pesha)
- Possessing a corrupted nature(avon)
- Failing to live rightly(chatta’ah)
Sin is not just behavior. It is:
- a condition
- a rebellion
- a corruption
- a separation from God
- Stay Under Control (Meek)
“Blessed are the gentle/meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matt 5:5)
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Meekness is strength submitted to God, not weakness.
What it calls us to stay:
- Controlled instead of reactive
- Yielded to God’s authority
- Powerful but disciplined
Jesus Himself describes Himself as “gentle and humble in heart”.
Num 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very humble (gentle, kind, devoid of self-righteousness), more than any man who was on the face of the earth.)
Meekness is humility and submission to God rather than self-exaltation.
- Stay Hungry for Righteousness
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.” (Matt 5:6)
This is deep spiritual appetite.
What it calls us to stay:
- Passionate for holiness
- Eager for God’s justice
- Dissatisfied with lukewarm faith
Kingdom people crave righteousness the way a starving person craves food.
Ps.42:1-2 As the deer pants [longingly] for the water brooks, So my soul pants [longingly] for You, O God. My soul (my life, my inner self) thirsts for God, for the living God. When will I come and see the face of God?
Php 3:12 Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me andmade me His own. [1Co 9:24; 1Ti 6:12]
Php 3:13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what liesahead,
Php 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus
- Stay Merciful
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” (Matt 5:7)
People who have experienced God’s mercy extend it to others.
Mat 18:33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave [who owed you little by comparison], as I had mercy on you?’
Mic 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you Except to be just, and to love [and to diligently practice] kindness (compassion), And to walk humbly with your God
What it calls us to stay:
- Forgiving
- Compassionate
- Gracious toward failures
This connects strongly with scenes like Jesus and the Woman Caught in Adultery, where Jesus balances truth and mercy.
- Stay Pure in Heart
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” (Matt 5:8)
Purity here means undivided devotion.
What it calls us to stay:
- Sincere
- Authentic
- Free from double-minded motives
God is concerned not only with behavior but the condition of the heart.
Jospeh in Potiphar’s house…
- Stay Peacemakers
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matt 5:9)
A peacemaker is a person who actively works to restore right relationships where conflict, division, or hostility exists—reflecting the reconciling work of God.
Peacemakers actively bring reconciliation.
What it calls us to stay:
- Reconcilers in conflict
- Builders of unity
- Representatives of God’s peace
This is not avoiding conflict—it is restoring relationships.
- Stay Faithful Even Under Pressure
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness.” (Matt 5:10–12)
Faithfulness to Christ will sometimes bring opposition.
What it calls us to stay:
- Courageous
- Loyal to truth
- Unmoved by cultural pressure
The Kingdom sometimes advances through endurance, not popularity.
The beatitudes call believers to remain:
- Humble
- Repentant
- Meek
- Hungry for righteousness
- Merciful
- Pure-hearted
- Peacemaking
- Faithful under pressure
