The Stewardship of Discipleship

The Stewardship of Discipleship

Mat 28:19  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20  teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always[remaining with you perpetually–regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.”

Jesus has commissioned us to make disciples — and stewardship is one of the primary ways we fulfill that calling. Stewardship isn’t just financial; it’s about living with purpose, investing with intention, and giving with faith. Jesus’ own words form the foundation for a life of Spirit-led generosity.

You are not just saved to sit — you are sent to serve. Stewardship is part of the Great Commission.

Stewardship is the faithful management, development, and use of everything God entrusts to us—Time, Resources, Abilities, Relationships, and Influence—for God’s purposes, God’s glory, and the good of others, with the understanding that God is the owner and we are accountable managers.

  1. Everything We Have Belongs to God

1 Peter 4:10 – “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…”
Matthew 25:14–30 (Parable of the Talents)

Matthew 25:14–30 – Parable of the Talents

10 talents 5 talents 1 talent.

God provides for us and expects a return on what he has given.

  • We have a responsibility to utilize what God has given us to serve others
  • We are not owners — we are entrusted stewards of God’s resources.
  • Stewardship includes our Time, Treasure, Talent, and Testimony.

We don’t just give to support ministry — we give to advance the mission

1Co 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Col 3:17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, doall in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

  1. The Law of Kingdom return.

Luke 6:38 –
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap.
For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”

  • Spoken by Jesus during His teaching on radical love, mercy, and forgiveness (Luke 6:27–38).
  • Though broader than money, this verse absolutely includes financial generosity.
  • Jesus uses marketplace imagery — grain being poured abundantly into a vessel.
  • This is not a “give to get” promise — it’s a heart principle:
  • Give like God gives —
  • freely, fully, faithfully — and you’ll be met with God’s abundance.

Jesus teaches that the measure we use — in generosity, mercy, and faith — becomes the measure we receive.
Our generosity is a mirror of our discipleship.

III. God’s Promise to the Generous cheerful Sower

2 Corinthians 9:6–11 –
“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly… God is able to bless you abundantly…”

2Co 9:6  Now [remember] this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to others] will also reap generously [and be blessed].

2Co 9:7  Let each one give [thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver [and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift]. [Pro 22:9]

2Co 9:8  And God is able to make all grace [every favor and earthly blessing] come in abundance to you, so that you may always [under all circumstances, regardless of the need] have complete sufficiency in everything [being completely self-sufficient in Him], and have an abundance for every good work and act of charity.

2Co 9:9  As it is written and forever remains written, “HE [the benevolent and generous person] SCATTERED ABROAD, HE GAVE TO THE POOR, HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ENDURES FOREVER!” [Psa 112:9]

2Co 9:10  Now He who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed for sowing [that is, your resources] and increase the harvest of your righteousness [which shows itself in active goodness, kindness, and love]. [Isa 55:10; Hos 10:12]

2Co 9:11  You will be enriched in every way so that you may be generous, and this [generosity, administered] through us is producing thanksgiving to God [from those who benefit].

  • Paul builds on the same principle Jesus taught: Sowing precedes reaping. You receive in the same manner you give.
  • Give thoughtfully. And cheerfully.
  • God blesses us not for luxury, but so we can increase in every good work.
  • God will always give to the generous, so they can continue to be generous.
  • He increases your righteousness. Your ability and desire to do good.
  • When we give, we open the door to Kingdom multiplication.

God enriches the sower to advance the Gospel, not accumulate for self.Your giving doesn’t just support ministry — it fuels it.

Matthew 10:8 – “Freely you have received; freely give.”
Acts 20:35 – “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

You have been commissioned — not just to proclaim the Gospel, but to participate in it through stewardship.
Let your stewardship reflect your surrender.
Let your generosity reveal your discipleship.
And let your giving fuel the mission of Jesus — in your home, your church, and the nations.
